Hit by pitch的意思

"Hit by pitch" (HBP) is a term used in baseball to describe an event in which a batter is struck by a pitched ball while in the batter's box. If the ball hits the batter, and in the umpire's judgment the batter made no attempt to avoid being hit, the batter is awarded first base. This is considered a way for the batter to reach base without swinging the bat and putting the ball in play.

In the official rules of baseball, Rule 6.08(b) states:

"A batter is out when—He is hit by a pitch that is in the strike zone and he makes no attempt to avoid being hit."

However, if the pitch is outside the strike zone and the batter does not make an attempt to avoid being hit, the batter is awarded first base.

Hit by pitch can be a strategic part of the game, as it can be used to intentionally put a batter on base to potentially create a force out situation or to disrupt the batting team's momentum. It can also be accidental, especially with pitchers who have a reputation for wildness or with pitchers who are throwing inside to a batter to establish the inside part of the plate.

In the context of statistics, being hit by a pitch is recorded as such, and it does not count as a time at bat for the batter. It can also be a measure of a batter's willingness to stand in the batter's box and take pitches, as some batters are more likely to be hit by pitches than others.
