Dry rot意思

"Dry rot" is a term used to describe a type of decay that can occur in wood, particularly in buildings, when it is exposed to damp conditions over a prolonged period of time. The term "dry" in this context is somewhat misleading, as the decay actually occurs when the wood is damp, not dry. The fungus that causes dry rot (Serpula lacrymans) can grow on wood with a moisture content as low as 20%, which is below the normal moisture content of wood in a healthy building.

Dry rot is a serious problem because it can spread rapidly through a building, attacking not only the structural timbers but also any other cellulose-based materials it encounters, such as paper, fabrics, and even wallpaper. The fungus produces a network of thread-like mycelium, which spreads through the wood, digesting the cellulose and hemicellulose components of the wood cell walls. This process weakens the wood, making it brittle and crumbly, and can ultimately lead to the failure of structural members if left untreated.

To prevent dry rot, it is important to keep buildings dry and well-ventilated, and to repair any leaks or damp problems promptly. If dry rot is detected, it should be treated with a fungicide and the affected wood may need to be replaced.
