Somatic cell意思

"Somatic cell" is a term used in biology to refer to any cell in a multicellular organism that is not an egg or sperm cell. In other words, somatic cells are the body cells that make up all the tissues and organs of an organism, excluding the reproductive cells.

Somatic cells are involved in the growth, maintenance, and repair of the body. They can divide through a process called mitosis, which allows them to reproduce themselves and create new cells as needed for growth, repair, or asexual reproduction (in some organisms).

In humans and many other organisms, somatic cells contain two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. This is in contrast to gametes (sex cells like eggs and sperm), which contain only one set of chromosomes. When two gametes fuse during sexual reproduction, the resulting zygote will have the full complement of two sets of chromosomes, which then develop into a new individual composed of somatic cells.
