Eddy currents (also called Foucault currents) are loops of electrical current induced within conductors by a changing magnetic field in the conductor according to Faraday's law of induction. They can be induced within any conductor that is exposed to a varying magnetic field. The term "eddy currents" is generally used in electromagnetism, while the term "Foucault currents" is more commonly used in solid-state physics and the study of thin films.

Eddy currents are named after British scientist Edward Victor Appleton, who discovered them in 1892. They are also sometimes called Foucault currents, after the French physicist Léon Foucault, who first described the phenomenon in 1851.

The presence of eddy currents can cause energy losses in electrical devices, as they generate heat through the resistance of the conductor. However, they also have various applications, such as in electrical brakes, induction heating, and non-destructive testing methods like eddy current testing.
