Blossom end rot意思

"Blossom end rot" is a term used in horticulture to describe a common disorder in certain fruits, particularly tomatoes and peppers, where the bottom (blossom end) of the fruit develops a dark, leathery, or rotten area. This condition is caused by a lack of calcium uptake by the plant, which results in the formation of a necrotic spot on the fruit.

The affected area may start as a small, water-soaked spot and gradually enlarge and turn brown or black. The rot can sometimes be accompanied by a fungal infection, which can further deteriorate the fruit. Blossom end rot is more likely to occur when there is fluctuating soil moisture, rapid fruit development, or when the plant is under stress due to factors such as drought, heat, or root damage.

To prevent blossom end rot, gardeners and farmers should focus on maintaining even soil moisture, providing adequate calcium to the plants through soil amendments or foliar sprays, and ensuring that the plants are not under undue stress.
